Mrs E and Mrs N

Many people trace the roots of the human race back to Adam and Eve. Good solid Biblical ground to stand on. But in order to get all the way back to Adam and Eve you have to pass through the incredibly narrow bottleneck of Mr and Mrs Noah. Adam was created and placed in the Garden of Eden. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord among a generation so perverse that God regretted creating mankind. Eve gets a lot of press. Mrs Noah, well, we don’t even know her name. Yet these two women hold such unique places in history that I am devoting my Mondays to re-creation.

I will never experience the totality of Eden or the devastation of a global flood. But each week I am faced with some of the same opportunities and challenges faced by Mrs. E and Mrs. N. What’s for dinner? Who’s going to clean up this mess? There’s a snake in the yard! And just like Mrs. E and Mrs. N I have choices to make. Will they have the same impact as life and death? They may. But through each and everyone I have the same God and the same power to impact lives.

Out of the garden…off the ark…on to the internet…Mrs E, Mrs N and Mrs V!

Be Holy

For it is written, “You must be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16

Fridays will mark the end of my blogging week and I have decided to leave you each week with your head and heart directed toward reverence. It has become part of the American social rhythm to look forward to the weekend. My heart’s desire is that as we journey forward this space at this time will encourage you to set more and more of your weekend aside to be still before God, to walk in the cool of the evening with Him, to not try to pack so much into your weekend that there is no time to just stop and breathe.

One of the ways God speaks to my heart is through music. You will find I quote a lot of old songs. Mostly because I learned them when I was young and they have traveled well with me. For this first Friday I offer the words of a doxology. For years this was page 1 of the hymnal at the churches I attended. It seems an appropriate place to begin.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who was, and is, and evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Viable Nut

Walking up from the lower field at our cabin I noticed an acorn. Not an unusual thing but it was lying on a small patch of ground surrounded but a icy cold mountain stream. The stream passes under the shadow of some mighty redwood trees and past our family cabin into the field beyond. I thought how ambitious of an acorn to put down roots under such less than perfect conditions. But just the sight of the acorn encouraged me greatly. You see, the old adage about a nut never falls far from the tree is very true. This acorn came from a white oak that did take root under less than perfect conditions and grew. It not only grew but it flurished enough to produce acorns. Looking at this lone little nut I wondered if it was a viable nut. I’m sure some have wondered the same about me at various times in my life. So I decided to plant it. To take it home in a plastic cup filled with soil from the mountain and raise up this little encourager.

As I re-launch my website today I am planting another kind of nut. “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels–a plentiful harvest of new lives.” John 12:24 NLT My old site is gone. As this new site grows, my prayer is that it will produce a plentiful harvest of new lives touched, encouraged, changed, and producing new harvest of their own.

It will take about 40 years for my little acorn to produce it’s first batch of viable nuts. That’s if it survives it’s time in a plastic up on my kitchen counter, I find a good place to plant it, the deer don’t eat it and it doesn’t suffer any untimely disasters. But still I plant and water and watch and wait.

“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”
- Psalms, 1.3
