The Queen of Questions

Out Of Bounds

peanutsOur society is breaking down. Traffic laws are flagrantly ignored. Violence is considered an acceptable form of free speech and encouraged by some sectors. The line between right and wrong has been erased along with manners, respect and courtesy.

Positions of authority I was taught to respect have become vehicles for bullies to beat down those they are supposed to serve. More is being taught by actions and images than by conversations and study.

I fear for my daughter in the world she will enter as an adult. The past four years of public education have squashed her love of learning, her passion for nature and her creativity. Teachers who had opportunities to encourage threw them away. Counselors who had opportunities to listen were in too much of a rush to process paperwork and missed the pain, fear and depression in the unspoken words because a student didn’t want to interrupt or didn’t believe they would be heard.

I would like to believe in the well-meaning of others. I would like to believe rudeness and thoughtlessness were exceptions instead of habits. I would like to believe there are more people living their lives as part of the human race instead of thinking they are above it.
Why, after centuries of progress and education and developement, why are people still angry and unhappy and selfish and unkind? Why have silicon and glass and electricity become something more and society has become something less?

I haven’t written much lately because I have been working on other projects but this morning the words of a young writer are circulating. He writes with passion out of his personal experience and observations. He says what others would like to but fear repercussions. He is a voice of the next generation and he doesn’t ask permission to make the hard calls. Wrong is wrong and he knows it when he sees it. A bully is a bully regardless of age, position or education. Reading his outrage gave me a little more hope for the future.
